Summer is a great time of year to dust our your old juicer and get some nutritious elixirs into your weekly routine. No matter what sort of juicer you have, there are benefits waiting to be had by you if you know the tricks.
Firstly, what sort of juicer do you own?
Do you have the centrifugal style with that large fast spinning basket in the middle? Your juicer is great at blitzing things at speed with minimal fuss. You can throw in whole apples, carrots, celery sticks and beetroot without trouble. The downside is that you will not get much out of grasses and herbs as they get stick in the process. Don’t worry though, you can just stir in a grass powder at the end if you like. Another downside is that you will loose nutrients as they oxidise so you need to drink your juice as soon as possible. It will keep longer if you juice a citrus fruit in your mix and keep in a sealed container in the fridge.
Do you have a screwdriver style side winding juicer like a Champion? This juicer is perfect for squeezing out leaves and grasses and you can get extra bang for your buck by having a wheatgrass shot before your main event! Be sure though to cut up all your goodies before hand so that you can get them through the small opening. A great tip is to alternate a squishy fruit like an orange with a hard food like a carrot to avoid any blockages. As your juicer runs slowly, it is kept cooler than a centrifugal juicer meaning that less enzymes are destroyed in the process. It still needs to be consumed as soon as possible for maximum benefits though.
The final frontier of juicing right now are cold pressed juicers. These guys move super slowly and generate no heat whilst in motion. This means that the oxidation process does not start and that you get the maximum amount of nutrition from your juice. It also means that it will keep for up to 3 days before loosing nutrition which makes it a pre-planners dream!
Now that you know how your machine works best or which one you are going to invest in, let’s get some delicious recipes moving! While green is always great, be sure to include a rainbow in your diet for maximum health benefits.
Cleansing green: 2 leaves of kale, 1 cucumber, 2 sticks of celery (leaves on), 2 green apples and ½ lime (no skin).
Hormonal heat: 2 beetroots, 1 inch of ginger, 1 inch of turmeric and ¼ pineapple (no skin)
Anti-ageing and immune superpowers: 3 carrots (tops removed), 1 orange (skin removed), 1 inch of turmeric.
Old faithful: 2 carrots, 1 apple, 1 orange and 1 inch ginger.
Always try for the best produce you can. Look for bulk buys of organic juicing carrots to avoid pesticide exposure and gain maximum nutrition. Remember, it is about doing the best you can when you can. Any juice is better than no juice so get to it!
