Viva La Vegan!

Hands up those of you who made a pledge to get (and stay!) healthy this New Year?

Well, with these simple steps and some willpower, you can transform your health no matter what shape you’re in now.

1. Get motivated, stay motivated. The power of written goals

By writing down your goals you can immediately and powerfully influence your reality, and maintain your focus. So why not give it a go? Take a little time to write down why you want to change, not just what you want to change. Then list a few realistic goals you can achieve easily over the next couple of months to get you where you want to be. Keep that piece of paper close by – put it in your wallet, on your computer, on the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, wherever you will see it, and review regularly.

2. Drink lots of water

If you’re like most people, chances are that you aren’t drinking enough water. Start flushing your body with water first thing in the morning, and throughout the day. And whenever you feel hungry, try drinking a large glass of water first. You may find that you actually no longer crave food. You can also try adding a few drops of fresh lemon juice to your water to boost its cleansing potential.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables

Eat more seasonal fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can provide you with more energy, boost your immune system, and help you get and stay in shape. And if you eat more fruits and vegetables you will probably eat less processed vegan junk food too! So set a goal to have a diet that consists of 60% – 80% of fruits and vegetables. Try eating more raw fruits and vegetables, and in no time, you’ll notice your body feels lighter and works more efficiently.

4. Eliminate coffee, alcohol and sugar

Do I hear your groaning? Not ready to give up that morning coffee, afternoon chocolate bar, or glass of wine with dinner? Then probably that’s a clear sign that you’re addicted and need to give them up for a while! (Try FebFast!)

5. Clean out your fridge and pantry

When was the last time you took stock of your fridge and pantry? They’re probably begging for a clean. Make your fridge and pantry a haven for nutritious foods, and fill them with healthy snack options that require very little preparation. Great quick snack ideas include nuts and seeds, veggie sticks and healthy dips like hummus, and lots of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. As long as your choices are minimally processed and nutritious foods, all is good! And yes, nuts and seeds should be kept in the fridge as the oils in them can go rancid if left in your cupboard for too long.

6. Get active outdoors

Outdoor exercise is a great way to get active and stay fit, and you can get some of that lovely vitamin D sunshine too. So why not go for a leisurely walk, run with a friend, try out a fitness boot camp, do some yoga in the park, or go cycling? The options are endless!

7. Get your beauty sleep

Sleep is essential for the body to repair damaged cells and muscles used during the day. It’s also the time that our stress hormones are normalised. A lack of sleep can not only make you feel tired, but can also effect digestion, nervous system, concentration, and can cause depression. So make sure you get enough quality sleep.
