Why did you decide to write your book?
I wrote my cookbook because of the high cost of shipping. Since Sweet Debbie’s customers are all over the country, my bakery ships their orders overnight. Not all of my customers can afford having their cupcakes Fed Exed, so I decided to write my recipes down so everyone could bake Sweet Debbie’s treats at home.
Why is allergy-free important to you?
When I learned that my young son is allergic to practically everything in the USDA Food Pyramid except salt, I realized that I had to reinvent how to cook, bake and eat. We do not bring anything into the house to which he is allergic. After getting involved in the food-allergic community I found out there are about 8 million other children in the United States alone that have the very same food allergies as my son. That’s why allergy-free is important.
What do you hope to achieve with the release?
I hope that people who make the recipes from my cookbook realize that baking without dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat, gluten, soy or refined sugar does not mean you are compromising enjoyment or flavor. I hope that they realize how easy it is to bake this way and the importance of the nutritional ingredients used only enhances the quality of these baked goods.
How long did the book take to make from creation of recipes to release?
The book is 7 years in the making. That is how long my bakery has been in business.
What has the response been like so far?
To my amazement, there has been much critical acclaim. People are overjoyed that a book like this now exists. I just found out my cookbook has been named a “Best Gluten-free Cookbook of 2013” by Delicious Living Magazine.
What are your future plans?
I’d like to have Sweet Debbie’s food trucks all over the country so that people can run out of the office for a healthy and satisfying sweet treat with their coffee while they work. I think it will enhance their productivity.

Debbie Adler opened her allergen-free, vegan bakery, Sweet Debbie's Organic Cupcakes, in Los Angeles in 2006. She has appeared on NBC's evening news, and has been featured in Pilates Style magazine and on InStyle online and E! Online. Her recipes have been published online by Food Allergy Research and Education, The Chalkboard, Life Goes Strong and AllergyMoms.com.
She is a graduate of Binghamton University and was a CPA for a large accounting firm in New York City until she realized all she wanted to do was count to a dozen. She is now the chef and owner of Sweet Debbie's Organic Cupcakes, which caters to celebrities, Hollywood studios, large food companies and customers nationwide. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and son.
