Top 10 Vegan Restaurants in Australia by Leigh-Chantelle from Viva la Vegan!
Viva la Vegan! originally started in 2005 with a recipe calendar released by Leigh-Chantelle. Due to feedback from fans, the website has evolved over the last 9 years, and is now an interactive, multimedia online community – and social media force - for vegans and the vegan-curious.
Viva la Vegan! and Leigh-Chantelle focus on creating and sharing positive vegan information, educating people about ethical lifestyle choices, and proving that through compassion we can heal ourselves and each other. The website focuses on easy-to-prepare recipes, blogs, articles, podcasts, interactive forum, informative and how-to videos, interviews with inspiring vegans, vegan mentoring, eBooks, print books, coaching and much more.
Leigh-Chantelle is a published author, international speaker, singer/songwriter and blogger who mostly lives in Brisbane, Australia. One of her favourite things is travelling the world, meeting new people and experiencing all the wonders life has to offer.
Here are her top 10 Vegan Restaurants in her home country, Australia:
Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales
All-vegan, Vietnamese-style whole food restaurant which uses a lot of ancient grains, super food and gluten-free ingredients. I love their 50s style décor, and commitment to nourishing, healthful and delicious food. I’d never met someone more obsessed with quinoa than me before meeting Lam. I love everything on their menu, take your friends, an empty stomach and make sure you book. Read my blog about my first dinner at Nourishing Quarter.
Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland
All-vegan, mostly organic café with an art gallery, live music, garden and space for kids to play. Start with a smoothie – or kombucha from their kombucha bar. Mandala make my favourite pizza in the world with their own nut cheese – order the Mandala Supreme to get a surprise topping from the chefs. There’s also a lot of raw items on the menu, including the desserts.
Adelaide, South Australia
All-vegan grocery store and café near Adelaide’s central market. Head chef and owner, Grace makes wonderful meals influenced from her Polish heritage with organic and local produce used. Try the kofta meal or the award winning Bliss burger – and save room for dessert. Read my blog about the first time I went to Bliss. Grace just released her first book, Confident Cooking.
Various locations in Sydney, New South Wales
Vegan, macrobiotic, mostly organic, nutritious and healthful cafés throughout Sydney. Great to eat in and for healthy takeaways - I love their lasagne and muffins. Would love to have my own vegan space one day, based on the Iku business model. Read my blog about eating at Iku and here.
Mount Gravatt, Brisbane, Queensland
I’ve been to a large amount of the chain of Loving Hut restaurants all over the world, and our own Loving Hut in Brisbane is one of the best. Asian-style, quick and cheap meals – great to bring your non-veg friends and family here for a meal. Their curries and pasta dishes are great, but most time I will order my favourite: iced chocolate drink and Loving Wrap main. Read my blog about the Mother’s Day lunch at Loving Hut.
Newtown (also St Leonards), Sydney, New South Wales
All-vegan Chinese-style restaurant. The first place I had seen where you pay based on the weight of your food – this is big in Asian countries. Great selection of food from the bain maries or from the menu. Go on the weekend for yum cha (dim sum.) Make sure you try the deep fried ice cream, other great desserts, and get one of their wonderful brownies from their Vegan Choice Grocery next door.  
Windsor, Brisbane, Queensland
All-vegan grocery store with all-vegan café. Open for breakfast and lunch, and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. A lot of not-so-healthy food for the junk food vegans. Their walnut and mushroom risotto is a must-try, as are their pancakes for breakfast.
Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria
Mostly-vegan, Asian-style and Western food with a lot of raw and gluten-free dishes. Great curries, noodles, wraps and desserts. Very fast service considering the amount of people who eat here at one time. Read my blog about Youg Green.
Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria
Vegetarian restaurant and one of Melbourne’s most popular restaurants for non-veg and veg people. Be prepared to wait for a long time to get a table, you can pass your time at their bar outside. They make great burgers and pizza, my favourite dish is the wonderfully flavourful Mostly Greens stir-fry with tempeh. Read my blog about Vegie Bar and here.     
Brisbane and West End, Queensland
Indian-inspired vegetarian eateries with a lot of vegan options including wonderful curries, cakes and vegan pizza wraps. As always, make sure you save room in your (second vegan sweets) stomach for Ruchi’s amazing desserts.
