Vegan City Guides is a new travel guide series for various areas written by a number of authors.
Vegan City Guides is the brainchild of a mother and daughter from Cape Town, South Africa. Their aim is that Vegan City Guides will become the go-to guides for vegans leaving their comfort zones to travelling to unfamiliar places.
Amelia - the daughter part of this two-woman team - took some time to answer a few questions:
- A general overview of life as a vegan in a particular city
- Food customs and attitudes towards vegans/vegetarians
- Explanation and translation of common local dishes
- Restaurant reviews and listings
- Vegan catering
- Grocery stores and markets
- Vegan-friendly accommodation
- Vegan tours
- Vegan activities
- Translations for a few vegan-related phrases
- Vegan resources (such as websites, Facebook groups, etc.)
Why did you create the vegan guides for Sydney and Melbourne?
The vegan guides to Sydney and Melbourne are only but two of our guides - we are currently working on a few more too. Melbourne and Sydney were obvious choices as they offer so many choices to vegans these days.
What do you hope to achieve?
Our aim is to cover every major and even smaller cities from around the world one day, and to become the go-to resource for vegan travellers in terms of vegan restaurants, shops, markets, events, accommodation, etc. in a given city.
What has the response been like so far?
We've only just started out, so we're still hoping to get the word out there through as many means as possible, including through well-loved blogs such as Viva la Vegan! Hopefully we'll build up some good word-of-mouth when people who have bought our guides realise how well-researched and indispensable they are.
What’s the next city to hopefully be featured?
We're still looking for writers for other Australian cities including maybe Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, etc. so if any local vegans reading this fancy themselves a guidebook writer please contact us via our website! The Vegan City Guide to Auckland is also in the works at the moment; we have already released Stuttgart and Krakow and Mumbai, Munich, Cologne, Birmingham, Taipei, Bangalore, Cape Town and a few others are also currently in various stages of completion.
Are you actively searching for new destinations for the guides?
Absolutely! But our search is more for qualified authors than for cities as such, as we really aim to find dedicated vegans who not only know their cities inside out, but are also fine writers who understand the needs of international travellers.
What’s your favourite travel destination?
I don't think I could choose only one! I am currently in what most people would consider a rather obscure travel destination, Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia. I'm sure many vegans would think it impossible to find vegan food in a place like this, but actually the local cuisine is fantastic for vegans due to the Orthodox tradition of fasting by eschewing animal products. My favourite dishes here include red kidney bean stew and eggplant with walnut paste and pomegranate pips. I also really enjoy Taipei for the immense variety of vegan foods on offer as well as Thailand for the beaches, fresh tropical fruit, fantastic weather, etc.
Where do you want to travel next?
Oh gosh, I'm not sure yet! I read something about Macedonia the other day that tickled my interest, but I'd also really love to go to India as I haven't been yet. The best part would be using our own Vegan City Guides to navigate my way as a vegan through the local cuisine without always coming up against ghee and paneer. Now wouldn't that be something?!

About Amelia Mulder:
Amelia was born in Windhoek, Namibia; raised in Pretoria and Cape Town, South Africa. She became a vegetarian over a decade ago when one day she inexplicably became disgusted by the smell of chicken being cooked, then gradually evolved to veganism when becoming aware of the treatment of animals on factory farms. Amelia has been fully vegan for probably four or five years now. She's a slow traveller who prefers to really emerge herself in a culture for a while, instead of trying to see as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. She's lived and worked in Taipei, Taiwan and has to satisfy her wanderlust at least every two years or so by exploring another part of our fascinating planet.
