The ladies took some time out to answer some of my questions:

Why did you decide to compile your book?
Our impetus for ReThink Food came from simultaneously watching family and friends struggle with today’s most common diseases for years and then completely rid themselves of the debilitating symptoms and re-gain their health and vitality upon adopting a whole foods plant-based diet within months. Through interviewing doctors for radio shows and our research, we found too many people today are not aware at all of the direct negative impact from eating meat and dairy and the amazing benefits of a plant based diet.
For us, it was clear that one concise book with over 100 experts sharing their depth of knowledge and years of experience with witnessing patients turn their lives completely around after adopting a plant based diet, would have a remarkable impact on lives. We know so many people who are confused and are steered into the system of conventional medicine, yet the answer to reversing and preventing diseases is most always right at our fingertips with the food choices we make.  By joining together doctors and other experts in Rethink Food from around the world that present the information in terms everyone can understand, we can finally set the record straight on the misinformation surrounding our healthcare.
We ultimately wrote ReThink Food to bring you these renowned physicians, scientists from distinguished universities, and registered dietitians from around the world that uncover the entire spectrum of amazing health benefits from a plant-based diet. As these doctors attest, there is a stunning difference in disease and wellness strongly associated with our dietary choices. Challenging the status quo, these doctors reveal how each and every chronic condition included is DIET RELATED.
Amy-Lee’s younger sister, Jessica, was diagnosed with a debilitating case of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when she was 9 years old. By her late teens, doctors predicted Jessica would be confined to a wheelchair. Although Jessica went through a variety of treatments from chemotherapy to Enbrel injections twice a day, nothing worked. At 16 years old, she had become a skeleton of her former vibrant and vivacious self. After reading how dairy can contribute to autoimmune diseases in The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Jessica went off all dairy and animal products and within 3 months her arthritis had gone into complete remission and stayed that way ever since. As Amy-Lee continually researched the connection between diet and health, she could not consciously eat meat and dairy without knowing she was destroying her health. Amy-Lee and her whole family have been vegan and plant-based since 2005.
Shushana, also a vegan since 2005, grew up eating mainly a whole food, plant-based diet with very little meat and dairy. At age 81, Shushana’s mother needed eye surgery to improve her deteriorating vision. After she removed meat and dairy from her diet, 3 weeks later her vision returned and her surgery was cancelled to her doctor’s astonishment. From strangers at the grocery stores, to the airport and corporate boardrooms, Shushana realized people do not know that food can both harm and heal. In order to provide answers to ill friends and family, she began interviewing doctors and found that success stories from dietary changes were not confined to our limited social circle or the United States but are becoming a world- wide phenomenon.
What do you hope to achieve with the release?
We aim to change the conversation surrounding healthcare, diet, and disease. We hope these doctors will inspire and empower readers to take charge of their health and embrace a plant based diet. It is a win- win lifestyle. For too long we have overlooked the importance and vital connection between diet and disease. It is time to put health back into healthcare and redefine the relationship between nutrition and disease. We hope this book sets the record straight on the misinformation surrounding our health.
What has the response been like so far?
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We have already had so many people encouraged and excited to make changes. We are inundated with messages speaking to the power of the physician’s voices. We have received many messages saying people are purchasing the book and passing them out to friends and family.
What’s the message you want people to take from your book?
We have been lead to believe meat and dairy is necessary for good health. We too have learned this is a myth and hope to share the science and studies with our readers to help them understand the direct relationship between diseases and meat and dairy.
Changing what we eat has the power to change our lives. Despite genetics, a diet based on whole, plant-based foods is most directly linked to excellent health, wellness, fitness, and longevity. It all begins with the courage to re-think food.
What are your future plans?
We aim to build Rethink Food into a brand that changes the way we approach healthcare. We have future books planned that continue to feature plant-based physicians in specific areas. Our second book, The Meaty Truth- The Stinking Facts About Our Food, releases October 2014. This book takes a hard look at the connection between our food, health, and environment.

Amy-Lee Goodman is a Wellesley College graduate and co-founded the plant-based food company Zibble Inc that partners with non-profits to frost a better future. She loves to travel and lives in New York.

Shushana Castle worked in the financial sector for 25 years and sits on numerous environmental boards. A self proclaimed super foodie, she loves hiking and splits her time between Houston and Telluride.

Amy-Lee and Shushana are seasoned co-author team passionate about helping others change their diet, to improve their lives. This duo aims to spread the message about how our food, health, and environment are all interconnected. The authors have appeared on dozens of TV and radio shows interviewing leading doctors and scientists in their respective fields about how our food choices are intimately connected to our health and the environmental crisis.
